Pierre-Jean Marcel

Passionate about photography dating from the beginning of the 20th century, his references are the pioneers of secession photography, Stieglitz, Steichen, Coburn and also Echaguë, Kertész, Hervé. A long-standing specialist in black and white photography, he currently uses colour and favours large formats. With this in mind, he has carried out a study on Italy which he regularly adds to.

Having always been drawn to tango music (in the 60s the dance halls in Grenoble were filled with this music, which the numerous Italians and Spaniards played along to and danced to like a lament identity), he spent a lot of time at the "Trottoirs de Buenos Aires", a birthplace for tango revival in France, haunted the tango festivals, and photographed this sensual dance in all its shapes and sizes.
From his time spent in Buenos Aires, Pierre Jean Marcel brought back a series of truly exceptional images.
His photographs highlight the contrasts between the city and tango music, between the shadows and light, like a universal link of a timeless "fervour" between Argentina and the rest of the world.
