Madhu Mangal Basu

Madhu Mangal Basu has chosen to paint pots and... the universe.
As a Bengali proverb says: "The pot contains the universe". The meaning of this proverb lies in the fact that a potter interacts with five existential elements of life - earth, water, wind, fire and space - all throughout the process of creation.

... "Pots - these humble objects - are in fact universal and timeless. They create a civilizing link - by that I mean that they have been and still are, in every place and in every time since the Neolithic period, owned by humanity. They are probably amongst the objects that originally revealed the creativity of mankind.Irrespective of the evolution of our minds and the development of science, they continue to accompany us in our daily lives in different shapes, appearances, materials etc., all of which seduce us and speak a social language to us, which is in perfect harmony with modern society.

I am simply trying to use my paintings to translate the poetry and the mystery of the durability of this modest object, to link the magma - the original matter - with the creative spirit of man, a collective and sustainable development."
