Caroline Wagenaar

After training in arts and crafts at the Estienne school of Paris, Caroline Wagenaar continued learning engraving and impression techniques (lithography, serigraphy, typography) in London at Roehampton College. It was whilst attending this university as well as visiting museums and galleries in the capital city of England that she first "met with" ceramics.

Gradually, experimentation became a necessity. In the year 2000, she jointly created the Ateliers Céramiques (Ceramic Workshops). Since then, both work with clay and different types of metal: steel, copper and brass and produce a range of interior and exterior ornaments: tables, mirrors, sculptures and frescoes.

A sculptor of animals at first, Caroline Wagenaar then worked with live models. She sculpts mythical characters to enhance realty poetry and depicts the animal part that each of us has within ourselves. Her influences are bipolar: from Goya to Mapplethorpe, from Dombrovski to Moebius, with a guided line, sensuality.

To move away from overexposed contemporary art, her work is aimed towards a sober line and the delicacy of various types of enamel - white, matt, satiny or shiny.

After creating a heat-resistant ink, she also prints in line-engraving on porcelain.

Her studies of the chemical compositions of enamel allow her to use a mineral palette in order to create varnished paintings.

In order to carry on expanding her field of work, she is now heading towards the international ceramic market...
