Bernard Staelen admits it himself that he is really fortunate to live in a magnificent region which, within the space of a few kilometres, goes from the sea to the countryside - which can be peaceful or mysterious like the Huelgoat Forest - and then from the countryside to the virtually-deserted landscapes of the Arrée Mountains. These places are all different, the lighting constantly changes, a real pleasure for painters and photographers. Painter and amateur photographer, self-taught, it's at the age of around 40 that he takes an interest in images; firstly in drawings and paintings, using his photos as the basis of his work. He has participated in group exhibitions, then had his own exhibitions in public places like the Quimper train station and the Espace Sérusier in Chateauneuf du Faou.
Today, photography has become more important than painting. Digital photography allows him to bring his images to life, to reproduce the atmospheres that he tried to convey through his paintings.
The artist invites us "wash our eyes out" in authentic images which are simply...beautiful.
