In Nathalie Meeus' work, the natural, raw aspects of clay are essential. Smooth, polished, caressed surfaces are confronted with the "telluric accidents” of raw materials to generated contact and balance. Besides this essential energy exchange, the sober, pure, linear and stark forms also learn to gain nourishment and richness from unexpected encounters with textures, textile prints, graphic lines, inserts of organic matter, metal or minerals... Lively appearances from an inspired imagination, Nathalie Meeus' sculptures draw on the deep sources of compound cultural inheritances and traditional techniques.
These unique pieces made of sandstone, polished or left rough depending on her inspiration, are first fired in an electric kiln, then sprayed with magic dilutions of sulphates and oxides. Once dry, they are delicately placed in a bed of sawdust and wood chips. The fire then works its magic for long hours, creating lines and surprises, unlikely shades of colour and light, different every time.
