JG Gwezenneg

J. G. GWEZENNEG was born in Rennes in 1941. He came to various studios in Paris but refused to join any of the painting schools, preferring to make his way alone. In 1968, he settled in the marshy region of La Hague, an area buffeted by wind and sea. Here, on the Cotentin coast, J. G. Gwezenneg did as many generations have done before, collecting the various objects swept up from shipwrecks. Like the Celts, this Breton is a "plunderer of wrecks", a "gleaner”.
J. G. Gwezenneg works with broken and worn materials to which he brings new life. These parts each have a story of their own, ancient or modern. He writes over with his own story. All the elements come from the sea although this was not a conscious choice initially. The mystery is linked to life and death. He gives new life to these fragments. He writes a new story for them.
