My work is based on presenting people in a funny way, a joyful spirit emerging from these characters with their square heads. Front-facing, fixed characters who look at us as if we come from the same world. Inspiration which comes from ancient portraits. I use acrylics, adding several other components to my paint: the medium is important in my artwork and I use ink for the detail. Characters who are at the same time similar, but different. They are like members of the same, unique family where physical resemblance is obvious. And yet, detail and the amount of distinctive elements enables each of them to have its own identity. The dominant pictorial presentation is close to both marginal art and contemporary primitivism, with graphic design that is specific to the universe of illustration - enabling to see a human genre. The uniformity of the compartmentalized bodies in angular, square shape opposes the facial expressions which define the individuals." Hervé OBERTO |
