Catherine Garrigue comes from French country stock. From very early on she expressed a passion for earth, the material that is rich from being ploughed, heavy, fertile and the birthplace of humanity. As a child, she would gaze at it, roll it around in her hands, observe it, play with it... This clay, like an invitation into a fantasy world, would become tiny characters in her fingers, living inside her imagination as a young child... Clay, earth, faience, stoneware... red, green, black, white. Regardless of its kind or colour, it has remained an important part of Catherine Garrigue's life... A desire to relate what cannot be expressed in words... an intuitive work in contact with her background and cultural inheritance. Starting from a sketch, the piece of work then guides her, achieving an often silent, inward-facing equilibrium. Earth: living and original matter is broken up and then brought back together. This approach to working with clay needs to be violent in order to express the intimacy of the fracture, thereby revealing the emotions of mankind.
