Peculiar birds

Sandstone, wood, metal, polyester - whatever the material - the sculptor has always excelled in capturing expressions. He started, many years ago, by working with human faces in the same style as the artist Daumier. His heads show twitches, grimaces and other poses, and little by little legs emerge, then various accessories, carioles, carts and other artefacts made by the artist from recycled materials. Not long ago, he decided that his characters should be accompanied by animals. Eventually, the animals alone managed to take over the front of the scene. And, since there's a natural transposition from humans, he keeps their facial features, alternating between being stupefied, beaming or inquisitive. A large panel of emotions are presented within the features of these peculiar, wooden, beasts - whether they are birds from elsewhere, or chickens, or donkeys or insects. They all have in common a certain form of humanity which the artist explains: "Animals share the same aspirations, the same games of seduction, the same essential constraints and even the same hassles as we do... The entire creation is completely excessive and endlessly intoxicating! So, as it's all about making fun of this tragi-comic condition, why not exaggerate the features. Earth is an immense aviary where a whole series of peculiar birds cross each other's paths and scorn at one another..."

Dancing and other devilishness...

This series, created in summer 2005, stems from the roots of a tree which was blown down by a storm... Uprooted for several years, these hard, crooked pieces of wood had been bleached by the rain, the wind and the sun...

The artist made do with the remains that he found - disposing of whatever he didn't need and adding whatever was missing - the idea being to ensure that he always worked with the original material.

These unusual circumstances are at the centre of this series. As a result, there are bizarre beings, just about human and animal, kind of devils dancing with joy or trying to keep their balance as they hover over empty spaces. In a way, it's the human condition... That facetiousness made up of happiness and tears, always on the brink of collapsing.

As he couldn't bear to be separated from his wooden beings, Milo Dias then transformed them into BRONZE... this way they'd be jealously kept forever.
